Galisteo Basin Preserve Winter Trail Series – Pandemic Edition

Like everything else, this year’s Galisteo Basin Preserve Winter Trail Race Series will be different! While many are holding “Virtual Races”, we have decided to keep this tradition going, just with a pandemic flair. You will be required to run the actual course, but you get to pick the date and time.

The beauty of this is you can run alone, with your friends, or with your four legged friends (burros, yep, not forbidden). You can pick a Monday evening or a Sunday morning, we just ask that you pick a day that is not muddy and respect the hours of the preserve (please don’t destroy the trails we are trying to protect). You can run it once or 50 times, but you will only get to submit one of your GPS tracks data for the month. We will not post any standings until the end of each respective races month.

This year, since you pretty much have a month to complete each race in the series, we have made it easy and you can only register for the series. The cost is $55.00 if you sign up before November 30, 2020 and $65.00 if you sign up the month of December (1- 31, 2020).

We will still offer a series discount to school teams, charity teams, law enforcement/first responder teams and military teams of 4 or more persons. Please email the race director for inquiries.

Each race will start at the Cowboy Shack Trailhead and you will have the entire month to run (December- The Hare, January – The Goat and February – The Coyote) it as many times as you want and submit your best time NLT 11:59pm the last day of the respective race month.

Course Info:
We will provide a detailed map as well as a online map via the All Trails APP. If you desire to do the longer distance you will repeat the loop, just in the reverse direction (fondly referred to as washing machine style). The direction of the first loop will be sent in the instructions email the week before each races month.

There is a portalet at the Cowboy Shack trailhead but bring your own TP and hand santizer (just in case). There is no water available at the preserve and we strongly suggest carrying water/hydration with you even for the shorter distances. This is a trail run and you never know how long you maybe out there.

Individuals who complete all three races (regardless of distance) will receive a series finisher award. We will mail these out to you upon completion of the series so make sure you register with the correct address.

The top male and top female for the long and short courses of the series will receive a pair or Chicken Leg running shorts (courtesy of Bluebird Running Company and will be entered into a drawing to win a one night stay in a king suite with breakfast and lunch included at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe. The top series finishers will be determined by a point system.

The second place female and male finishers of the long and short course series will receive a Zensa face mask (courtesy of Bluebird Running Company). We will also be awarding Donut Hole covers to other finishers based on placement.

Point system:
Points will be calculated similar to cross country scoring and each runner is their own “team” for the series. You will receive points based on your place when crossing the finish line for your division (divisions are male and female for both the long and short courses). The runners with the total lowest points for the series in their divisions will place in the top 3.

All races will start at the Cowboy Shack Trailhead and a map can be found using this Google map link. Old school directions – from I-25 take 285 south for 5.5 miles, after you cross the train tracks take the second road on the right. Pass the first intersection (New Moon Overlook) staying straight on Astral Valley Rd. Keep right at the next 3 intersections. Please respect the posted speed limit.

We cannot offer any refunds or transfers.

All profits of the race series will support Commonweal Conservancy in its stewardship activities of the GBP. Last year we raised over $5200.00, so a BIG THANK YOU to everyone that participated last year! The road and trailhead improvements are obvious and they are adding another 5 miles of trails this year….maybe a 50k race will be in the near future…. If you would like to learn more about the GBP please check out their website.

If you are interested in supporting the series you can inquire using the button below. Thank you!

Am I eligible for the top finisher prize if I mix the race distance? No, you must complete all 3 races in either the long or short courses to be eligible. Meaning, you are ineligible if you run The Hare 4 miler, The Goat 8 miler and then The Coyote 6 Miler. You will still however be eligible for the series finisher award.
