Galisteo Basin Preserve Winter Trail Series

Do the wintery cold temps keep you from doing what you love? Maybe you never have been brave enough to experience a run on the trails alone. Whether a newby or a veteran, the Galisteo Basin Preserve(GBP) Winter Trail Series will have something everyone can enjoy. Located in the high desert and only an hour from Albuquerque (20 min from Santa Fe), the GBP trails are a mecca of fast and flowy single track with amazing views. Grab your friends and head out for a morning on the trails then hang out afterwards at one of the local establishments (listed below) for some grub and brews and to reminisce about your morning adventures.

SERIES STANDINGS


REGISTRATION

Each race is $20.00 regardless of your desired distance. If you sign up for all three races the cost is only $55.00. The series option discount will only be available till the running of the Hare.

Race day registration will be available for $25.00 Cash Only. Online registration is open till 6 PM the day before each race and we encourage you to register online as it saves trees and prevents last minute scrambling.


We will offer an additional per race and series discount to school teams, charity teams, law enforcement/first responder teams and military teams of 4 or more persons. Please email the race director for inquiries.


VOLUNTEER

If you are interested in being part of the series but running is not your thing we would love to have your help. We have various task including parking guides, set-up and tear down, timing, etc. If interested please click the button below to sign up! COURSE AND RACE INFO

Each race will start on their respective Saturday at 10:00 am at the Cowboy Shack Trailhead. Race day registration and check in will be from 8:30 am to 9:45 am. A trail/safety brief will begin promptly at 9:45am. Please do not arrive before 8:30 am.

Course Info: 
Each course will be one VERY WELL MARKED loop. If you desire to do the longer distance, you will complete the first loop with the shorter distance peeps and then turn around and hit it again just in the reverse direction (fondly referred to as washing machine style).

Cut-off times:
Each race will have a specific cut-off time to begin the second loop. If you do not finish the first loop by the cut-off time you will not be allowed to start the second (as a race participant).

  • The Hare – Must start 2nd loop by 11:00 am
  • The Goat – Must start 2nd loop by 11:10 am
  • The Coyote – Must start 2nd loop by 11:30 am

Food/Water/Restrooms: 
We will have water and Hammer Heed and post race snacks available at the start/finish. We strongly suggest carrying water/hydration with you even for the shorter distances. This is a trail run and you never know how long you maybe out there. There is a porta-let available at the start/finish.


AWARDS

Individuals who complete all three races (regardless of distance) will receive a series finisher award.

Those who finish in the top 3 male and top 3 female for both the long and short courses of the series will receive a sweet gift (tba). The top series finishers will be determined by a point system.

All awards will be given shortly after the finish of The Coyote.

Point system: 
Points will be calculated similar to cross country scoring and each runner is their own “team” for the series. You will receive points based on your place when crossing the finish line for your division (divisions are male and female for both the long and short courses). The runners with the total lowest points for the series in their divisions will place in the top 3.


DIRECTIONS AND PARKING

All races will start at the Cowboy Shack Trailhead and a map can be found using this Google map link. Old school directions – from I-25 take 285 south for 5.5 miles, after you cross the train tracks take the second road on the right and follow the dirt road and signs to the trail head. Please respect the posted speed limit.

Parking is limited so we ask that you car pool (reduce that carbon footprint). There will be parking volunteers to guide you so please be respectful of their directions.


CANCELLATIONS/REFUNDS/TRANSFERS

We cannot offer any refunds or transfers.

In the event of rainy or muddy conditions the race will be delayed to the following day (Sunday). If we must cancel the race on Sunday we cannot offer any refunds or transfers. Please note, if the ground is frozen, including snow, we will run. Cancellations will be announced via email and facebook by 7:30 am race day or delay day.

FAQs

Are dogs allowed to run in the races? Sorry, Pet dogs are not allowed.

Am I eligible for the top finisher prize if I mix the race distance? No, you must complete all 3 races in either the long or short courses to be eligible. Meaning, you are ineligible if you run The Hare 4 miler, The Goat 8 miler and then The Coyote 6 Miler. You will still however be eligible for the series finisher award.

Can I run with my burro in the races? Sorry, Burros are not allowed.
